In the waters of Holy Baptism not only did God promise to give to your son or daughter the fate and destiny of Christ, but you also made a promise to nurture your child in the Christian faith. You promised . . .
- To live with him/her among God’s faithful people,
- Bring him/her to the word of God and the holy supper,
- Teach him/her the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments,
- Place in his/her hands the holy scriptures,
- And nurture him/her in faith and prayer
- So that your child may learn to trust God,
- Proclaim Christ through word and deed,
- Care for others and the world God made,
- And work for justice and faith.
This means that the family is the primary place for the formation and nurturing of Christian faith in the promises of God. It is a process that lasts for a lifetime and never ends until we take our last breath. It is a journey that begins at Baptism and continues into eternity.
Traditionally Christ Church and the Lutheran denomination have especially focused on teaching the Christian faith to junior high aged youth through confirmation ministry:
Confirmation ministry is a pastoral and educational ministry of the church that helps the baptized through Word and Sacrament to identify more deeply with the Christian community and participate more fully in its mission.
At Christ Church this ministry is currently implemented through a ministry called JOURNEY. Where JOURNEY differs from various forms of confirmation ministry in the past is that it involves not just the youth but also their parents, families and all adults in the congregation. Christian faith is a journey that is not just for jr. high youth. Every Christian has been called to this journey regardless of their age. JOURNEY is structured to reflect that fact. It provides an opportunity for Christians of every age to explore their questions and discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus in whatever stage of life they happen to be.
