Children in Worship @ Christ Church

Let the Children Come to Me

Mark 10:14

Welcome! Children are important members of our congregation at Christ Church. Children of any age are welcome in our congregational worship services as full participants because they are members of the church, the body of Christ. In our baptismal service, parents, sponsors, and the whole congregation promise to bring the child to worship.

Why do we want children in Worship?

Children gift us! They bring their simple faith, their eagerness, their questions, and their imaginations. They help us see God through their new eyes. Their questions help us clarify our beliefs. Yes, they giggle, they poke, they squirm and swing their legs because they are children and sometimes this can be a real exercise in aggravation. But then again, so are many facets of parenting and the rewards are well worth it!

  • Jesus welcomed children into the Kingdom!
  • In worship children learn they belong to Christ.
  • Children learn how to worship by worshipping with the congregation Sunday after Sunday.
  • Children learn behaviors that respect the worship experience of others.
  • The church is a community of all ages.
  • Children complete the family of faith.
  • Children discover they are valued as persons by God and by his people.
  • We can learn from children.
  • Children witness the drama of baptism and communion as signs of God's kindness and favor.
  • God speaks to children through Bible stories and hymns.

How can you help make worship more meaningful for children?

  • Arrival time - Review the bulletin for new parts, etc. Sit where children can see the action of the worship - front and center.
  • Pray together, "Dear Jesus, help me listen. Help me sing. Help me pray. Amen."
  • Help your child feel welcome by using The Children’s Worship Bulletin or the Worship Bags available from an usher.
  • Encourage participation - learn recurring parts of the liturgy (Hear our Prayer; Lord, have mercy; Apostles’ Creed; Lord’s Prayer, etc.).
  • Sing the hymns with children - hold hymnals for those too young to read, point to words for those learning to read, etc. Follow the scripture reading.
  • During Passing of the Peace, greet the children in the pews near you. Make eye contact with a child after worship and tell them you are glad to see them.
  • Help children notice the minister, choir, seasonal colors, banners, windows, or particular events happening on this day - baptisms, festivals, etc.
  • Help your child visit the restroom prior to the service. If your child is restless, you may use the rocking chair in the back of the sanctuary. Use soft voices to speak with your child. Decide on a cue that will let children know to settle down. If your child cannot settle down easily, please feel free to take your child out until he/she calms down and then return.
  • You are welcome and encouraged to come to the Children's Sermon with your child.
  • Discuss at home what you see and hear in the service; answer questions.
  • A nursery is provided for children through age 3. Ask an usher for directions.
